RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. It offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 1.5 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors.

You must be currently enrolled at a university/college in the United States, Canada or the UK as a full-time student in the field of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences or engineering (or a closely related field), be an undergraduate who will have completed at least 2 years of a degree program by the time of the placement, and prove that you will be registered as an undergraduate at your university/college for the academic year (i.e., that you will still have undergraduate status upon your return to your home university).

Cornell University/University of Massachusetts Food Science Summer Scholars Program

Besides research experience, participants learn about various career opportunities within food science, take field trips to area industries (large and small), as well as meet on a semi-weekly basis to discuss various topics including Ethics in Food Science, Applying for Graduate School, Product Development, Learning from Research, and more. On the last day of the program, scholars are given the opportunity to present their research to an audience of peers. The goal of the research is to train participants to plan and conduct experiments, to evaluate data resulting from experiments, and to communicate research results through oral and written reports.

These programs provide opportunities to gain research experience in a variety of biological fields, including biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, ecology, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, and neurobiology.
Participating students will be matched, according to their interests, with faculty sponsors. Students will spend ten weeks working in a state-of-the-art research laboratory, as part of their sponsor’s research team. The research experience will be supplemented by an informal seminar series in which students will learn about the research interests and career paths of current students and faculty. To help students understand their research projects more deeply, they will each give verbal presentations and write a short proposal about their individual projects and present a poster at the end of the Program. Academic credit for the program is available. Students are expected to work full-time in the research laboratory for the duration of the program.
