Translations Department

Echoing its broad international scope, the Journal of Young Investigators (JYI) announces an initiative to create a Translations Department. This department will expand the reach of JYI's articles and manuscripts, making them accessible to readers of global languages. The department's target languages will begin with Spanish and French before expanding into others such as Mandarin, German, etc, based on demand and availability of translators in the target language.

In tandem with JYI's mission of educating undergraduates across disciplines, the Translations Department will hire students of foreign language from around the world and bilingual speakers interested in developing a scientific vocabulary.  Prospective translators will first render JYI's press releases in their target language before expanding to manuscript abstracts, entire news and careers pieces, with the ultimate goal of translating our published scientific manuscripts.

“We are very excited to be adding the Translations Department to our organization’s offering,” said Amelia Powell, Editor-in-Chief at JYI. “Not only will this allow our published science and the work of our staff members to reach different parts of the world, but this is a great opportunity for undergraduates of non-scientific disciplines to get involved. Our mission is to provide undergraduate students with an insight into the world of scientific publishing, and through this new venture we hope to expand this further.”

Translators will report to editors, who have achieved fluency in their target language. Due to the difficulty of conveying scientific concepts across languages, faculty mentors will provide resources and assistance to the editors or supervisors of the translators, which will ensure an accurate translation.  More detailed job descriptions and qualifications can be found below.

By engaging undergraduate language students in the translation of scientific articles, JYI hopes to expand its accessibility to readers of global languages and foster a collaborative environment with students across disciplines, allowing foreign language students an opportunity to experience scientific communication in a real-world environment.
